Online Store & Written Prescription Policy

Lakeview Animal Clinic will no longer process orders for medications or preventatives sent directly to us from third-party online suppliers not affiliated with our clinic. Clients who order through third-party online suppliers will need to pick up a written prescription for those medications to provide to the online supplier directly, as well as sign a written prescription waiver.

Why Did We Making This Change?

You have trusted us with the very important responsibility of your pet’s medical care. We know your pet’s medical history, and our doctors are personally vested in providing the absolute best care to your pet, including the dispensing of safe medications. By directly authorizing medication from an online retailer, we are giving our approval of that particular medication from that particular online retailer as safe and appropriate. Because of the way in which almost all non-accredited, third-party online suppliers operate, we cannot guarantee that an online big box seller, such as Chewy, is going to act in the best interest of your pet and our patient. We cannot guarantee the medications are handled appropriately during shipment or that they are stored according to the manufacturer’s requirements. Nor do we know where the medications are obtained from, as often they come from other countries. 

Our Doctors need to know that the medications you receive are the exact medication they are prescribing in the proper dosage and that those medications were stored and shipped as mandated by the manufacturer. We would feel terrible should we have even a passive part in causing harm to your pet, our patient, because an online supplier misrepresented, improperly stored, or mishandled a medication. Not to mention there is the very real possibility that you could receive counterfeit medication when buying from a non-accredited online supplier. They do not know you or your pet, nor do they care to, but we do, and we care about you and your pet, our patient we swore to protect.

Please understand that this is not a decision made lightly and, in fact, we have had to care for several pets that have received poor quality medications or preventatives from third-party online pharmacies that failed, costing our clients more money and risking the health and safety of our patients. We have seen this at our clinic and therefore have decided to protect our patients and hope our clients understand.

Letting You Make The Choice

We want to be very clear in saying that you need to purchase products only from a properly accredited and certified veterinary pharmacy. We understand that there are many reasons that our clients may want to purchase medications from big box online stores, such as Chewy, and we want you to make the most informed decision for your pet. We do hope that you order medications and preventatives from our own online store that you can access via our Online Store tab. We price medications and preventatives, as well as food and toys, competitively with those big box online stores to offer affordable pricing and direct shipping options.

Our online store is an accredited and certified pharmacy and has continually held the Veterinary-Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™ (Vet-VIPPS) seal, a rigorous accreditation program administered through the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®). The Vet-Vipps seal ensures our clients are buying safe medications and medical devices from a licensed, regulated pharmacy in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws as well as national pharmacy standards. Because our online store is part of our clinic infrastructure, you will not need a written prescription if you order from our online store. 

However, if you choose to buy medications from somewhere other than a certified veterinary pharmacy, we want to give you that option should you choose to do so. We only require a signed written prescription waiver that states you understand the risks and loss of manufacturer guarantees should the medication or preventative fail, and your pet gets sick.

We do our very best to make our medications and preventatives affordable, and we routinely compare prices to other online providers to make sure that our prices are competitive. In fact, many of our preventatives come with free shipping, and you can have products on your doorstep within a day or two of ordering. Our “Easy Dose It” program allows you to have single doses of heartworm and flea/tick preventatives shipped monthly for up to a full year. You pay for the product as you go, there is no cost for shipping, and the entire process is completely controlled by you and only you. Medications you purchase from our online store are guaranteed by the product’s manufacturer and, most importantly, by us, your pet’s Veterinarian. Our online pharmacy includes manufacturer rebates and price cuts, as well as manufacturer guarantees on most preventatives*. Our doctors know your pet’s medical history and want all of our patients to get the highest quality medications to treat their individual medical needs. Manufacturer’s Guarantee

The manufacturers that we get our preventatives through care about your pet as much as we do and stand behind their products 100%. That is why they offer a guarantee on preventatives purchased through an accredited veterinary pharmacy. This guarantee is that their product will prevent the diseases they promise to protect against and should the medication fail, they will cover the cost of treatment with proof of purchase that follows the manufacturer’s guidelines of use.

For example, when you purchase Heartgard Plus through us, Boehringer Ingelheim guarantees that their product will prevent heartworm disease, as well as the listed internal parasites, while the product is being administered according to their recommendation, which is monthly all year round. If your pet were to get heartworm after having a negative heartworm test prior to starting the preventative and while using Heartgard Plus monthly, year round, Boehringer Ingelheim will cover the cost of treatment for the disease*.

However, if you purchase the same product from a non-accredited pharmacy, such as Chewy, Boehringer Ingelheim does not offer this guarantee. This is mainly due to not knowing if the product failed due to a manufacturer error or poor handling and storage by the non-accredited pharmacy.
